Hello, I’m Andrew.

I’m a Senior Data Analyst currently working for the Department for Education on a contract basis. I love solving problems, finding patterns and trying to tell interesting stories through data.

I studied Mathematics and Statistics at Newcastle University, finishing my Masters in 2016. Newcastle University started teaching students R as soon as second year when I did my undergraduate – it’s hard not to fall in love with data science when you have opportunities like that – I’m very grateful for it.

I got my first job as a Data Scientist the same year at a start-up called Gavurin. They gave me a lot of opportunities I’m grateful for, like getting to grips with the cloud, teaching me SQL and allowing me to develop my skills in R.

After leaving Gavurin, I worked on machine learning models for the insurance industry at Verisk as a Data Scientist, mainly using MATLAB and RapidMiner. I put Python based machine learning models into production environments as a Data Engineer at Zerolight using AWS.

I then moved to Bloom where I got to use visualisations tools like Google Data Studio and Tableau for the first time. I automated the existing manual reports into self service dashboards powered by a data warehouse in Google Big Query (which had already been expertly created so I could just connect to and just start making charts.)

I also fell in love with volunteering during this period – helping out at GoodGym, FoodCycle and Youth Homeless North East. In 2021 I joined Mental Health Concern as a Data Scientist, which was a dream move to be able to work in tech for good for the first time as part of a data team under excellent and caring management. We won the Talend Data Masters: Rising Star award in 2022 for our work creating a data lake and data warehouse using Talend and Snowflake.
